Taming Rotor Whirl with Film-Damper Bearings

Machine Design, 1973

Recently, TRI released a Tech Note comparing pressure dam bearings and elliptical bore bearings. Both bearings are designed to suppress subsychronous vibrations, or oil whirl. Although, the Tech Note is new, the subject has been well understood at TRI for decades. Dr. Mel Giberson first published about the subject back in 1973 when he penned an article for Machine Design.
